On the Scene: Retapping trees at Dry Brook Sugar House

Today we are at Dry Brook Sugar House in Salem, N.Y. where the Keyes and Chambers families are retapping a sugarbush to get a little more life out of what has been a very long season. Tapped since mid-January, the men decided this week to rebore the same tap holes with a slightly bigger drill bit (from 19/64ths on the original hole to 5/16ths on the rebored holes) and the results they say have been fantastic. The 1,000 redrilled taps are running much harder than the other 7,000 or so they have out this year ...
